1) Le verbe devoir
The verb “must / to have to”
- Devoir est un verbe à trois bases. Devoir is a verb with three stems.
- Il s’utilise avec un sujet précis. It is used with a specific subject.
- Construction : Sujet + devoir (au présent) + infinitif. Subject + devoir (present tense) + infinitive.
- Il exprime une obligation personnelle. It expresses a personal obligation.
Tu dois sortir la poubelle.
You must take out the trash.

2) Le verbe falloir (il faut)
The verb “to have to / it is necessary”
- Falloir s’utilise uniquement avec il. Falloir is only used with “il”.
- C’est une formulation impersonnelle. It is an impersonal structure.
- Construction : Il faut + infinitif. It is necessary to + infinitive.
- On ne précise pas qui fait l’action. We do not specify who does the action.
Il faut sortir la poubelle.
It is necessary to take out the trash.

3) Exprimer l’interdiction
Expressing prohibition
On utilise la forme négative :
- Ne pas devoir + infinitif Must not + infinitive
- Il ne faut pas + infinitif One must not / It is forbidden to + infinitive
Tu ne dois pas fumer ici.
You must not smoke here.
Il ne faut pas parler pendant l’examen.
You must not speak during the exam.
⚠️ Astuce pour anglophones
En anglais, on dit souvent “must” pour tout. En français :
- devoir = obligation personnelle (sujet précis)
- il faut = obligation générale (structure impersonnelle)
